At Rognstranda, two very different geological stories meet. On the west side of the bay, smooth-cut boulders can be seen. Here, the old bedrock is beautifully sculpted through the last millions of years of ice ages. In the rock itself, minerals and structures show how the rocks have been through great changes deep in the earth's crust - notice the beautiful patterns.
The steep cliffs to the east, Rognsflauene, consists of limestones alternating with sand and clay stones. It has taken millions of years to form the mighty cliffs that stretch from Rognstranda, via Høgenhei, Frierflauene and up through Porsgrunn and Skien. In the layers one can find fossils; imprints of animals that lived in the sea that covered "Norway" 450 million years ago!
Rognstranda is a good starting point for a walk on the coastal path, towards Langesund or further south. Be aware that parts of the embarrassment can be prone to landslides!
