Telemark offers experiences and impressions for both adults and children. Here is an overview of Telemark's biggest attractions:
The Telemark Canal was finished in 1892 and was, for many years, a very important route between the upper and lower Telemark. Experience the magnificent scenery while taking the boat through the 18 locks that lift you from 0 to 72 m. Travel from Skien to Dalen.
Heddal Stave church is the best preserved stave church in Norway, located outside Notodden. The beautiful nave was built in the 1200s. Here you will find rose paintings from the 1600s, and "bishop's chair" from the Middle Ages.
Jomfruland is an island located outside Kragerø, and is part of a moraine stretching from the Baltic Sea, through Sweden and along the Norwegian coast. The island's pleasant climate and lush vegetation attracts a varied bird life: around 60-70 different species nest here. Jomfruland is especially known for its long pebble beach. There is no traffic on the island, and it is popular for cyclists and campers. Jomfruland is known to be one of the places in Norway with the most sunny days.
The path that goes up Telemark's highest mountain, Mount Gausta 1883 m. is popular and takes about 2 hours. On a clear day one can see one sixth of Norway from the top. The mountain is located at Rjukan, on the edge of Hardangervidda, which also has hiking trails to the west coast of Norway.
Henrik Ibsen lived on the farm Venstøp since he was 7 years old until he was 15. His childhood home is now a modern museum dedicated to the author. His childhood in Skien has been an inspiration for many of his works, including "Vildanden", which is one of the most famous.
Rjukan stood at the center of one of the most important acts of sabotage during World War II, when Norwegian saboteurs prevented the Germans from developing nuclear bomb with heavy water that was produced here. At the Norwegian Industrial Workers Museum - Vemork is an exhibition that focuses on sabotage missions, as well as an exhibition about Rjukan and its industry. The Rjukan Waterfall provided the basis for building the world's largest power station of the time at Vemork in 1911.
Morgedal is called the "cradle of skiing". Skiing as we know it today began in the 1850's, with Sondre Norheim and his revolutionary ski model. The visitor center Norwegian Skieventyr houses a multimedia journey through the history of skiing, and a ski makers workshop where you can layer your own skis.
West Telemark Museum in Eidsborg consists of more than 30 houses and buildings. In addition to the intimate Eidsborg houses from the 1200s, one can visit stale observation loft, the oldest non-religious building. A new modern museum building opened last year and will accommodate a large number of different exhibitions.
Ever since the Ice Age, stones and gravel was whirled around by the water in a stream and formed large potholes. Today the river is dammed, and potholes along the river formed a natural water park suitable for all children in all ages. On hot days the potholes almost as hot springs, heated stones and the surrounding mountains.
Krossobanen (temporarily closed in 2024) is Scandinavia's oldest cableway, which is still in regular traffic. It was built in 1928 and was a gift from the Norwegian Hydro to the urban population, so that they could get up in the mountains to see the sun during winter. The view over Rjukan from top drive is spectacular, with mountains stretching to the south and the beautiful valley where Rjukan is located. Gaustabanen is a tram inside Mt. Gaustatoppen, and transports passengers almost to the top of Telemark's highest mountain.
Bø Sommarland is one of Scandinavia's largest water parks, located in Bø/Mid-Telemark. It has one of the world's largest artificial wave equipment for surfing, and the largest water based rollercoaster. The park is located in natural surroundings, and is a great place for kids of all ages.
For more than 100 years ago Notodden was venue for a modern fairy tale. In 1905, the world’s first industrial production of mineral fertilizer – with air as raw material – started here. It happened at a time when the world needed more food and farmers needed more fertilizer to increase crop yields. A visit in the industrial museum and the exhibition will make you better acquainted with the events that can include Notodden and Rjukan at UNESCO World Heritage Site.
