Skien Fritidspark – Active Leisure for Everyone

Skien Fritidspark is one of Norway’s most accessible leisure parks, where universal design is a top priority. The park offers a wide variety of activities, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to participate. It provides free accessible parking and easy access to all facilities.

Adapted activities include:

• Universally designed hiking trails and picnic areas.
• A water park with accessible changing rooms, pools, and saunas.

Hotel Fritidsparken features 34 universally designed rooms and received the Accessibility Award in both 2018 and 2020. The hotel places great emphasis on ensuring that all guests, regardless of ability, have a comfortable stay.

Bø Sommarland – Accessibility in the Water Park

Although Bø Sommarland Waterpark is not a fully universally designed park, it actively works to improve accessibility.

Accessibility measures include:

With an increasing focus on universal design and accessibility, Telemark is a destination where everyone can enjoy nature, activities, and relaxation on equal terms. No matter your needs, there are excellent options to ensure an accessible and memorable experience!

Project "Inclusive Tourism in Telemark"

The businesses in Mid-Telemark had recognized the need for better accessibility for guests with disabilities for some time but lacked knowledge about the best way to do it. Consequently, the project "Inclusive Tourism in Telemark" was initiated, where 15 tourism businesses in Mid-Telemark collaborated to improve travel and experience offerings for guests with disabilities.

None of the participating businesses have the capacity to become fully universally accessible, but they are all working towards making accommodations to the extent possible.

A common element for all participants in the project is the use of the Sunflower Symbol. The Sunflower Symbol is a discreet way to indicate to those around you that you have an invisible disability and may require additional assistance, help, or simply some extra time. By wearing this symbol/band, employees can easily ask if you need help and how they can assist you. The Sunflower Symbol is intended for both adults and children.

Skien Leisure Park offers "Good Experiences for everyone"

At Skien Leisure Park, they adhere to the vision of "Good Experiences for All!"

The park aims to ensure that individuals with disabilities who visit the park have equal opportunities to participate in the numerous activities it offers.

Skien Leisure Park and the Skien Leisure Park Hotel are located 3 km from downtown Skien in a peaceful area with large green spaces and excellent hiking opportunities in forests and fields. Here, you can enjoy good experiences regardless of your disability, whether it be limited mobility, visual impairment, hearing impairment, allergies, or asthma.

A significant portion of the park is universally accessible, and they have made extensive efforts to accommodate individuals with disabilities. The water park, hiking trails, and some of the outdoor activities are well-suited for those with special needs who seek an active leisure time.

In 2018, Skien Leisure Park Hotel received the municipality's accessibility award for the renovation of the restaurant and meeting room facilities. Among other improvements, they installed loop systems and ceiling lifts in the rooms. In the summer of 2022, the hotel will offer an additional 24 new accessible rooms for various needs in addition to the rooms they currently have.

The park has collaborated with several organizations, including the Norwegian Association of Disabled (Funksjonshemmedes Fellesorganisasjon), the Municipal Council for People with Disabilities (Det kommunale Rådet for mennesker med nedsatt funksjonsevne), the Norwegian Association of Disabled (Norges Handikapforbund), and the Muscular Dystrophy Association (Foreningen for muskelsyke). Additionally, the Asthma and Allergy Association (Astma- og allergiforeningen) and the Association of the Hearing Impaired (Hørselshemmedes Landsforbund) provide valuable input in their work. The kitchen, menus, and dining hall all reflect these efforts.

Hamaren Activity Park – Fyresdal

One of the most universally designed trails in Telemark is found in Hamaren Activity Park in Fyresdal. Here, you can follow a 3.5 km adapted trail winding through scenic surroundings, crossing bridges and gravel paths. The highlight is the spectacular Treetop Trail, which ends in a large circular viewing platform at 343 meters above sea level, offering breathtaking panoramic views of Fyresvatn. The park has won both the International Design Award and the Innovation Award for Universal Design.

Tinnemyra – Notodden

Tinnemyra is a popular recreational park in Notodden with excellent hiking opportunities. The area features wide, gravel-paved, and well-lit trails, making them ideal for strollers, wheelchairs, and hikers of all ages. Industripromenaden – Notodden

The industrial promenade in Notodden is a unique hiking trail combining history and nature. Kjerringsteinløypa – Tuddal

Kjerringsteinløypa (the woman stone trail) in Tuddal offers an accessible nature experience with its well-adapted terrain. Starting at Tuddal Høyfjellshotel, this scenic forest and mountain trail is suitable for both hikers and those with limited mobility. Along the route, you’ll find breathtaking views of Telemark’s stunning landscapes. Skien Fritidspark

Located just 3 km from Skien city center, Skien Fritidspark is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. The park offers well-lit trails of 1 km, 2.5 km, and 5 km, with the shorter routes being ideal for wheelchair users. The 5 km trail has some steeper sections and is not recommended for solo hikers with mobility challenges. With several rest areas along the paths, this is a fantastic spot to enjoy a day in nature.

Skotfosstien – Skien

The Skotfosstien cultural trail is a 3.7 km cultural path starting at Løveid Locks, winding through forests and along waterways. The trail is wide and flat, ensuring excellent accessibility for wheelchair users. The Sculpture Forest "Sofia" – Vrangfoss Locks

Water Tales in Haukeli – Haukelifjell

Located along the E134 highway on the Water Tales in Haukeli is a 1.3 km interactive adventure trail. The first section, leading to a fishing spot and scenic viewpoint, is wheelchair accessible. The trail offers engaging activities for both children and adults, making it an exciting stop on your journey.

Moland Cultural Heritage Trail – Fyresdal

In Fyresdal, you can explore the Moland Cultural Heritage Trail, a picturesque 3 km loop through Folkestadbyen. Along the way, you’ll discover historic farms, traditional buildings, and Øyskogen, a burial site with 18 ancient burial mounds. Most of the trail is wheelchair accessible, and the journey ends at the stunning Fyresvatn lake.

Town Centre Walk in Rjukan
