Duration: approx. 2 hr 40 mins (8.1 km)
Difficulty level: Moderate
Season: May–Oct
In good weather, this summit offers views to Brokefjell and Brakandalsfjell in Kvitseid and Roholtfjell in Vrådal. If it’s completely clear, you can even glimpse Færder lighthouse and the Swedish coast.
Description of hike
The hike starts with a sharp right turn from the car park. Follow the signs to Nordkollen and the blue-waymarked footpath heading steeply uphill. The footpath continues downhill, over two small streams and slightly uphill again to Tjennane, where it comes out on a logging road. Follow this for 40 m to the signs “Nordkollen S” and “Nordkollen N”. Here, you can choose whether to approach the summit from the north or south. Note that these routes are only signed – there are no blue waymarks.
Option 1:
The gradient varies but there are no particularly steep sections. Turn sharp right and follow the sign “Nordkollen S”. The trail initially runs between the two lakes – Tjennane – and on across Tjennaneskarven, an area of stony terrain. Cross the logging road at Langemyr and continue uphill to the summit.
Option 2:
This is a relatively steep hike to the summit. Follow the sign for “Nordkollen N” by continuing 600 m on the road to a crossroads. Take the road to the left, signed “Nordkollen N” and follow it for 600 m, right to the end. Continue gently uphill for another 600 m to the top of the gorge. Here you will meet the footpath from Kvislarønningen in Siljan. Follow this to the right, signed “Nordkollen”. Now you start the steep climb to the summit and the viewpoint looking south.
Access
Take the E18 from Porsgrunn to Moheim and turn left towards Oklungen by the JYSK furniture store. Follow the road for approx. 10 km, then turn off the county road towards Oklungen and Stranda kapell. After a few minutes, you cross a small bridge and turn left. Drive to the end of the municipal road and park at the car park, where there is one road straight down to the left and one to the right with a barrier.
