About

Grorud Chapel (Grorud Kapell) is a rare historical treasure, located in the small village of Grorud, in the northern part of the Siljan Municipality in Telemark. The chapel is built as a long church (langkirke) and possesses a unique history tied to World War II.

The Chapel from the War Years

Grorud Chapel is notable because it is one of very few church buildings in Norway that was consecrated and inaugurated during the German occupation.

  • Laying of the Foundation Stone: July 5, 1942.
  • Date of Inauguration: July 9, 1944.

This makes the chapel an important symbol of local initiative and faith, even during difficult times.

Visiting Grorud Chapel

The chapel is beautifully situated in the Siljan landscape.

Even though the church is not always open for interior viewing, the beautiful area surrounding Grorud Chapel is a fine and peaceful place to visit to enjoy the surroundings and reflect on the site's unique history.
