The Culture Trail Århus
The Culture Trail Århus in Skien is a 4.5 km long trail or road where you walk along a rich agricultural area and cultural landscape with a lot of history. The cultural trail runs in an area of the city that is full of history. The trail starts at Århus farm, 3 km northwest of Skien center.
The cultural trail passes, among other places, Altenburg Århus, where Henrik Ibsen's mother lived during the summer. At Ibsen's Venstøp, today Henrik Ibsen Museum, Henrik lived eight of his childhood years. The path continues towards the petroglyph field at Fossum, then to Fossum main farm and Fossum Ironworks. Fossum Ironworks was the country's first ironworks. From here the road goes via Fossum school and on back to Århus.
Skien municipality has made a guidebook of the cultural trail that can be picked up at Skien tourist office at the Service Center in Skien municipality.
History
Aarhus farm Århus farm was probably cleared in the older Iron Age, and is today an experimental farm owned by Telemark Landbruksselskap. On the farm there are 19 burial mounds, a carp pond with a copy of a log boat, rock collection and a copy of Norway's oldest wicker house which was unveiled on the square in Skien in 1979. The reconstructed Iron Age farm with three houses was completed in 2005.
