Gunnarsholmen is located right beside the Kragerø guest harbour, just a short walk from the town center.
Gunnarsholmen was originally an old coastal fort which protected Kragerø in the 18th and 19th century when warships and pirates threatened the city. Today it is an open area with excellent swimming opportunities including beach, salt water swimmingpool, slide for kids, kiosk, lawn area and service facilities. Gunnarsholmen also has a special ramp enabling handicapted and wheelchair users to enjoy both the pool and the sea.
In 1808 tried the English frigate "Tarter" to invade the town, but was chased by the canons of the coastal fort. The fort has been restored to its original condition, and is connected to the mainland by a pier. Every year Gunnarsholmen is visited by tourists and locals. The anchor by the coastal fort is from around 1850 and was found in Tallakshavn in Kragerø.
Every Easter Sunday children up to 7 years can join the Chocolate Easter egg hunt at Gunnarsholmen, it is an event for free!
