Here are beautiful wooden houses along the small streets and many well-kept houses.
The stereotypical for Langesund is the elongated city determined by the topography. The oldest settlement was built around Kongshavn.
Here, the seafarers met the first safe harbor and gradually, the place developed in connection with the need for repair of sailing ships and out at Smitangen, a shipyard was established early on. Langesund became a seaport in 1680 and many of the patriarchal houses at the harbor and by the water are from the 1600s and the 18th centuries.
The old town hall is in baroque style from 1771, Wrightegaarden from 17th century and modernized around 1800 in neoclassicism and the 4 floors at Cudrio Sjøbad (coastal Museum) are made out of timber from the early 18th century. With the development, the city expanded southwards, and in Søndre-Strandgate we can still experience the old building and street environment that is characteristic of the coastal towns.
By following Vaterlandsgate from the square and all the way to Furustranda, you’ll get a good impression of the elongated city. Langesundtangen, Steinvika, Langesund Bad and Krogshavn are all close to the center of the city and are well worth a visit.
Langesund customs warehouse as it stands today was erected in 1869.
