Porsgrunds Porselænsfabrik is known for its exquisite craftsmanship and timeless design. Few patterns are as iconic as the hand-painted Bogstad Strå—a delicate, cobalt blue motif affectionately known as the “eternity pattern.” For over 130 years, it has adorned Norwegian porcelain and remains a proud symbol of our heritage.
The straw pattern has its roots in 18th-century Europe, originally developed by the Meissen porcelain factory in Germany. Inspired by traditional Chinese porcelain, the design features stylized flowers and vines, painted in a distinctive cobalt blue. Since 1887, it has been one of our most beloved and recognizable collections.
What makes the Bogstad Strå truly special? Every single piece is hand-painted by skilled artisans. While the core design stays the same, each item is one-of-a-kind—subtly unique thanks to the artist’s hand.
Painting the straw pattern is a true art form—requiring years of training, precision, and an eye for detail. Only our most experienced painters handle this work, and each brushstroke must be perfect. A single mistake means starting from scratch. That’s why every finished piece carries not only quality, but also the painter’s initials—an elegant signature of their craftsmanship.
Want to see the process up close? At Porsgrunds Porselænsfabrik, you can experience how porcelain is made—from raw material to finished masterpiece. Explore the step-by-step artistry behind each hand-painted detail.
In our factory outlet, you’ll find a wide selection of authentic, hand-painted Bogstad Strå porcelain. Whether you’re a collector, a design lover, or simply curious about Norwegian craft, a visit offers a rare glimpse into a living tradition.
In a world of mass production, our dedication to handcraftsmanship stands strong. We proudly continue the legacy of straw painting—preserving not only a technique, but a story of patience, passion, and precision.
