About

Experience Historic Surroundings, Spectacular Nature, and Unique Accommodation at Bolkesjø Gaard

At Bolkesjø Gaard, you stay in the heart of history, surrounded by majestic mountains, deep forests, and crystal-clear lakes. Sleep in a four-poster bed inside Norway’s oldest residential house from the 13th century, gather the whole family at a charming tenant farm, or find complete tranquility at a secluded mountain pasture. Whether you want to immerse yourself in cultural heritage, explore the wilderness, or simply enjoy the silence, Bolkesjø Gaard offers an experience beyond the ordinary.

Accommodation for Every Taste
Bolkesjø Gaard offers a variety of accommodations, each with its own charm and unique connection to nature and history:

Årestua and Stabburet on the Farm – Perfect for those who love cultural heritage and history. Stay in Norway’s oldest residential house from the 1200s, where authentic atmosphere meets modern comfort. Or choose the Stabburet, a charming alternative for a historic stay in the heart of the farmyard. Both offer stunning views of the Telemark mountains and all necessary amenities.

Jonrud Tenant Farm – Tailored for families and groups of friends. Here, the whole extended family can gather, with easy access to Follsjø’s new beach, where both young children and adults can enjoy the summer. A long table is set up in the courtyard, and the old pigsty has been converted into a sauna.

Secluded Mountain Pasture Retreat – Looking for total peace and quiet? Stay at the farm’s 19th-century mountain pasture cabin, nestled deep in the forest, where silence and the sounds of nature create a truly special experience. With no running water or electricity, and if you turn off your phone, you can easily transport yourself back to a simpler time.

Lakeside Glamping – During summer, wake up in an exclusive glamping tent right by the water at lake Follsjø. The tent is furnished with a comfortable double bed, with the option to add up to two extra beds for children.

We also offer customized experiences and accommodations for groups—contact us for event planning!

Activities and Outdoor Experiences
Spend your entire day outdoors—whether in the mountains, the forest, or by the lake. Meet the grazing farm animals, take a swim in Follsjø, or relax in our sauna after a long day in nature. The public beach at Follsjø has become especially popular among young children and seniors.

Bolkesjø Gaard is the perfect starting point for hikes, whether you want to explore the surrounding forests or take on more challenging routes in the stunning Blefjell mountain range or to the famous Dusanfossen waterfall. Follsjø offers excellent fishing year-round, and we provide equipment for both rod fishing and ice fishing for those wanting to try their luck.

In winter, fantastic cross-country ski trails await at Blefjell, and we have both snowshoes and sleds available for guests. If you prefer cycling, the area around Bolkesjø is ideal for both leisurely rides and more demanding trails through varied terrain.

Rich Cultural Heritage – Stay in Norway’s Oldest Wooden House
Bolkesjø has a long tradition of hospitality. Since 1624, it has been a coach station, and in the 19th century, it was known as the “Gateway to the Land of Adventure.” Here, you will find protected log buildings, beautiful storehouses, and a truly special atmosphere. The highlight is Årestua from the 13th century, Norway’s oldest wooden residential house, now restored with a modern extension—offering a unique blend of past and present.

Protected Natural Area and Flourishing Cultural Landscape
Bolkesjø Gaard is not only rich in history but also in unique nature. We maintain several wildflower meadows and have our own protected area, Bjønnestille, where you can explore a rare biodiversity.
