Island hopping on Skåtøy and Jomfruland with bicycle, 22 km!
Skåtøy
Start the day by taking the ferry to Skåtøy. From the Skåtøyroa ( the ferry port) follow the dirt road over a hilly terrain until the first stop of the day, the Skåtøy Church aka "Archipelago Cathedral". The onward journey goes through scenic surroundings ends up at Korset , by the sea . On a warm summerday it's nice to go fro a swim here while waiting for a taxi boat that will bring your to Jomfruland and Aasvik pier. At Aasvik pier there is a nice café Okidokk Mat & Drikke (open during high season).
Jomfruland
On Jomfruland a flat dirt road will take you north towards Øitangen but first you´ll have the possibility for having a lunch at Haga Kystkafé (at Tower) or Tårnbrygga cafe. After lunch you can walk up the tower to see the panoramic view of the archipelago. At the tower is both Lighthouse keeper's house and the old Skolestua where there are exhibitions in the summer.
Behind the tower is the famous Tower-pond where Theodor Kittelsen got his inspiration for the folktales character Nøkken (water troll). From this point you can clearly see the moraine that extends along the entire coast along Vestfold, Telemark and Aust-Agder. See also how different all pebbles are because they during the Ice Age came from different mountains in inner Telemark and Aust-Agder. Bicycling further north, we will pass Jomfruland Manor and Hasselgården. On Hasselgården organic herbs and vegetables are sold. Then the bikejourney continue through a magnificent oak forest and out to Øitangen - a beautiful recreational area with lovely white sand beach.
End the day by taking the ferry back to Kragerø in the afternoon from Tower wharf (Tårnbrygga) at Haga Kystkafé. Make sure you book a taxi boat before departure, and calculate approximately 3 hours after arrival Skåtøyroa to be picked up at Korset by the taxi boat. Then you have a enough time ! Taxi price will vary by number of passengers.
You can also choose to stay over at Øitangen or Jomfruland camping if you would like to spend the night at Jomfruland and continue your journey the next day, although make sure you pre-book if you choose this option.
