Berg-Kragerø Museum promotes art, history, holiday life, coastal culture and export of natural ice in Kragerø - Make sure you explore our Edvard Munch exhibition.
Berg-Kragerø Museum is idyllically located at Berg beside Hellefjorden Kragerø. Here you will find the Homann family's summer recidence, where several cultural personalities lived in the 19th century and the early 20th centuries. These summer recidences is a testament from a time when timber and natural ice export created employment and great wealth.
In 1927, Miss Henriette Marie "Jeia" Homann (1866-1943) bequeathed the entire property, with all of the buildings and contents, for a museum. Later, several historical buildings were moved to Berg-Kragerø Museum. The property covers almost 700 acres with linden gazebo, park area, a large forest, hiking trails, exhibition building, a grain store, Bestas Cottage, the rigging shed, Solhaug Cabin, the farm tenant’s house, a barn, an earth cellar and two bathing houses. In addition, Berg-Kragerø Museum owns Kittelsenhuset, the childhood house of the artist Theodor Kittelsen, situated in the center of Kragerø.
In the museum building there are both permanent and changing exhibitions and it includes a shop and a café. You can see and listen to the exciting story of natural ice exported to the world from Kragerø, of shipbuilding at Tangen shipyard and last but not least the story about Edvard Munch’s stay and art created in Kragerø. The toy exhibition is popular with children of all ages. Guided tours are provided daily in the summer opening times and the rest of the year there are arranged on request.
A museum visit can be combined with recreation in the park, on nature trails, boating, swimming and sunbathing. There is a boat jetty for day visitors and a car park. The exhibition building is equiped with an elevator and a diaper changing table. There is also a playroom and a collage workshop for children. Outside, the children can try the rebus trails, or borrow outdoor toys and games.
The museum is open June 19th - August 22nd, Tuesday to Sunday, from 11 am to 4 pm. It is also open every Wednesday throughout the year. Other events and lectures occur on Sundays. From June 2021, "Music on Berg" starts, and will take place on the second Thursday each month. Follow the museums Facebook for more information about current events.
