The canal route is a fantastic cycling experience that goes along one of the world's eighth wonders that was carved into the rock over 100 years ago. Follow national cycle route no. 2, which is signposted all the way, and experience a lock crossing on a bicycle, which is a spectacular experience that you can only find at Eidsfoss lock. Shortly afterwards comes Vrangfoss lock, which is the largest lock facility on the canal and is well worth a stop. Along the way, you can see the old lock systems in full operation. The stone-smeared lock walls, the huge lock gates, the opening and closing mechanism - everything is authentic. The captains and lock staff make the canal trip a real pleasure and if you take parts of the cycle route on the canal boat, this will make the trip even more interesting.
Tour description
The canal route follows low-traffic roads through surprisingly wild and dramatic nature to the west along the canal. The road is hilly in places and the trip is suitable for cyclists. You can divide the trip into several stages and adapt it completely to your own skills and wishes. Most people need two days from Ulefoss to Dalen, while some want to spend more time. The trip can be cycled both ways. Remember to stock up before you set out on today's cycling stage. There are limited offers along the canal route, especially on the stretch from Vrådal to Dalen.
In 2024, the cycle route between Ulefoss and Vrangfoss is closed due to roadworks. We recommend that cyclists start in Lunde.
