You can cycle from Ulefoss on Lake Norsjø to Dalen in the interior in just two days. The Canal Route is a fantastic cycling experience along what was considered the ‘eighth wonder of the world’ when it was cut into the rocks more than 100 years ago. Follow National Cycle Route no. 2, which is waymarked along its entire length. A spectacular experience awaits at Eidsfoss, the only lock that you cross by bike. Along the way, you can also see the old lock systems in operation: the stone walls of the locks, the enormous lock gates, the opening and closing mechanism – everything is authentic. The boat captains and lock staff make the canal tour a real pleasure, and using a canal boat for parts of the cycle route adds a whole new perspective.
The Telemark Canal offers cycle routes rich in history. The Bjønnerunden route takes you past two castles, church ruins from the Middle Ages, and on past Telemark’s largest estate and one of Norway’s oldest industrial sites.
If you prefer a slightly shorter trip through fantastic landscapes, past places to swim and all the way to the Telemark Canal, the Solsida route might fit the bill.
Offering enormous variations in landscape and a number of distinctive features, the Telemark Canal extends from coast to mountains, from south-coast idyll via the gently rolling fruit-growing districts of Midt-Telemark to high mountains and the mighty Hardangervidda mountain plateau!
