About

The journey through Sogelandet, in the villages of Hjartdal, Svartdal, and Flatdal, is best experienced at a pace that allows you to truly take in the majestic nature and ancient cultural landscapes. In the hills, forests, mounds, and valleys, you'll find tales of giants and trolls, goblins and forest nymphs—or at least, that’s what the locals say. Legends and stories tied to the landscape and place names are a key part of what makes this area so special. This land has inspired artists for generations. The enchanting natural beauty and the soft, blue light have drawn wave after wave of artists to Telemark and Flatdal.

The View from Nylende

From the viewpoint at Nylende—now developed as a designated stop along the road—you can gaze out over Flatdal and towards the Skorve wall. The green valley floor is a river plain, and at the end of it lies the lake Flatsjå. The settlement is gathered in the Flatdal village cluster, which includes ten farmyards and the Flatdal Church, dating back to 1654. This clustering of homes was a practical solution to the frequent flooding of the lower valley.

A Framed Landscape Experience

The small new viewpoint structure here beautifully frames the scenic view. Walking out onto the platform, framed by an opening that shifts from horizontal to vertical, highlights the dramatic contrast between the flat, green valley floor and the steep, blue wall of Skorve in a whole new way.

A Welcoming Rest Stop

Across the road, facilities for both car and bike parking have been built, along with a small toilet building. On its wall, you’ll find maps and information showing cycling routes and suggested stops. A stream flowing down from the mountain behind now has a stone-lined outlet, offering tired cyclists a chance to cool their feet in fresh mountain water.
