If you do not already know your way around Skåtøy we recommend that you use norgeskart.no or you can download the app UT (they have an English option). There is also an ongoing job to get all trails and paths on this map, so you always know that you are literally on the right path.

2. Ferry doc “Skåtøyroa”
When the ferry arrives at Skåtøy the first thing you see is a building dating back to the 1700. The building was first used for salt storage in connection to the family Biørn`s shipyard. Later the building was used for boatbuilding and is today categorized as national heritage.
3. Old ice dam
In the 1800 exportation of ice was an important business in Kragerø. The ice was used for storing food and drinks and was exported to several parts of Europe. At the end of the 1800 the exportation starts to decrease and what is known as «Age of sail» ends. You can still find traces form this time period several places in Kragerø. 4. Eidkilkanalen/the troll
Eidkilkanalen is an artificially constructed channel that divides Skåtøy in two. The connection between the two parts is being maintained with a bridge over the channel. The labor of constructing the channel started in 1924, and the channel opened by itself when tde dam broke from ice pressing in 1936. Entering the channel, you see what is known as the 'Eidkil Troll' painted on the mountain wall.
5. Stavseng lighthouse
Stavseng lighthouse is situated on the eastside of the Kragerø fjord, and is there to ease the in sailing to Kragerø town center. Stavseng lighthouse was planned and then constructed in 1874, at the same time as Strømtangen lighthouse which you find a little further out the fjord. The lighthouse station consists of four buildings. The height of the lighthouse was increased by three meters in 1907 and was automatized in 1968.
6. Eidkilen bakery sale
By the idyllic Eidkil-channel you find a bakery full of delights: Fresh ecological sourdough bread, rolls, cinnamon rolls, cold drinks, coffee, ice-cream amongst other things. You are also welcome to visit their morning sale at the actual bakery at Øytunet. You can follow Eidkilen bakeriutsalg on Facebook for more information. 7. Øytunet accomodation
At western Skåtøy, on the way to Krikken coastal fort, you find a beautiful accommodation called Øytunet. They can welcome up to fifty people in total, divided in one big house and several apartments. Suitable for holidays, parties, company trips, seminars, weddings etc. Catering can be ordered from Eidkilen bakery and its possible to rent kayaks. 8. Krikken (coastal fort from the second world war)
Krikken coastal fort is located at the end of Skåtøy, strategically overlooking the entrance to Kragerø by sea. Krikken costal fort was one of the biggest during the second world war, it held vast amounts of cannons, trenches and massive mountain caves used by the Germans during the war. Today it is a popular hiking area, situated on top of a mountain with a view of Portør in the west, to Jomfruland at the east. You can bring your own flashlight and go on a historical adventure through all the underground paths, at your own risk. Read more here.
9. Skåtøy Island hairdresser
Hairdresser Irene Dåvøy has here studio at Granliveien 6, a 10-minute walk from both Skåtøyroa and Skåtøybrygge (Skåtøy peir). Sha also does home visits around the island or other places if needed. Book your appointment at Facebook, timma.no or call +47 46470834.
10. Helleren
Helleren at Skåtøy is called: Hvistendahlhelleren. It is a huge mountain cliff creating a natural cave located not far from what is knowns as «Pestas hus», the house of the character known as “Pesta” which means The Plague created by Theodor Kittelsen.
11. Pestas House, (The house of “The Plague” – “Pesta”)
Pesta from Skåtøy is knowns as the artist Theodor Kittelsen`s «femme fatale», she is a recurring character in the artist’s work based on The Black Death (plague), a historical tragedy that Kittelsen had been inspired by for a long time.

13. Theodor Kittelsens Home
The artist Theodor KitteIsen (best konwn for his illustrations of the Norwegian 'troll') lived in this house as a newlywed. He and his wife, Inga, had their first child at Skåtøy and several of his paintings have been made at Skåtøy. Theodor Kittelsen was born in Kragerø, and his childhood home is a museum today. The museum is in the center of town in Kragerø. The house he lived in at Skåtøy on the other hand is privately owned, so we encourage everyone to respect the privacy of the people living there. The road passes the house so you can still observe the place where Kittelsen and his wife enjoyed their time as newlyweds, and where he met the old lady that later inspired the work of ”Pesta”. 14. Åskvika (public pier)
This is a public pier where you can park your boat. You also find a nice little location for swimming.
15. Skåtøy Church
Close to Skåtøy Cafe you find Skåtøy Church, which is also known as «The Archipelago Cathedral». The church can welcome eight hundred people and is one of the largest wooden churches in Norway. The church is located at the narrowest part of the Island, and you can easily access the church from the Skåtøybrygge (pier) from one side of the Island, or Åsvik public pier at the other side. The main road going from the ferry doc at Skåtøyroa, passes the church. It is 2.1 kilometers from where the ferry stops to the church. The church holds religious services as well as concerts and exhibitions. During the summer they have concerts every week showing of their unique Hollenback organ. Read more here.
16. Skåtøy Cafe
Skåtøy Cafe has become a cultural meeting place for everyone living or visiting the Archipelago in Kragerø. The café offers a multitude of experiences including art exhibitions and concerts. It is a meeting place for everyone that live at the Island as well as tourist visiting. Read more here.
17. Gallery Bak Fasaden (Behind the Facade)
If you are interested in art the gallery “Behind the Façade” is the place to go this summer. Located in beautiful surroundings the gallery offers exhibitions meant to trigger wonder and curiosity. They also offer simple food and beverage serving, in their beautiful garden. For more information click here. (Open in high season from June to the end of August)
18. Kragerø Montessori school, «multi-purpose house» and obstacle course
The building known as the «multi-purpose house» was finished back in 2002. Several hours of volunteer work as well as founding was needed, and today the building contains a gymnasium and a theater scene, as well as space for what used to be a kindergarten. Today you can rent the space for parties or other events. In the woods behind the school, you find an obstacle course for children including swings, climbing paths etc. Even though the obstacle course is meant for children we recommend adult supervision, and all use is at one’s own risk.
19. Skåtøy pier, public pier.
Skåtøy pier is also known as the Church pier. School children going to town is picked up at this pier by a speed boat. Sometimes the ferry “Gamle Kragerø” stops here when hired for special trips, for instance to and from concerts at Skåtøy. On the inside of the pier, you can park your private boat and it is also possible to use the pier for swimming.
20. «Elleville strikkedille» (Addicted to knitting)
At «Elleville strikkedille» you can buy yarn for knitting, accessories, knitting recipes and finished knitted products. Ann Kristin Lund also knits on demand when someone wants something specific. She also sells and produces her own shampoo, creams, homemade juice, jam, herbal spice and pickled vegetables from her private garden.
21. The Elephant (beach and viewpoint)
'The Elephant' is a formation of mountains that resembles an elephant when viewed from the seaside. It has a magnificent view from the top, and there is also a small sand beach where you can go swimming.
22. Catering Solutions
At the end of Kirkesundveien (the road), about 5 kilometers from the ferry stop, you find Catering Solutions. Dennis van Voornveld and his family offers authentic Italian pizza cooked with wood in a brick oven, all throughout the summer season. They also deliver fresh bread to your cabin or to your boat if you are vacationing at Skåtøy. If you are planning an event Dennis offers catering of several types, everything from delicious lunch to finger food, cold buffet or nine course dinner for both small and big parties all year round. 23. Football, handball, tennis court and “gapahuk” .
At Mellommyra you find a grass field for playing football and a concrete handball/tennis court. You also find a traditional «gapahuk», outdoors theater scene and a climbing stand for children.
24. Felt maker
Visit felt maker May Hvistendahl and her studio at Skåtøy. May is a skilled artist within the nanofelt field. Some might say she is the best in the world at what she does and has held courses all over the globe. May also makes hats, clothes, wedding gowns etc. A visit to her studio is just as exiting for children as for adults. Read more here.
25. «Korset» (Old idyllic fishing village)
At the end of Skåtøy, close to the sea but still protected by all the smaller islands around, you find an old idyllic fishing village called «Korset». In the old days this was the main port for fishing spring herring, full of life and fishing boats at all times. Today it is a calm picturesque landscape where both locals and tourists come to enjoy the calmness of the sea. Read more here.
