I 1861 reiste nesten hundre menneske frå Fyresdal i Vest-Telemark til ei lovande men ukjend framtid i USA. Mange slo seg ned i ei busetting i Sør-Minnesota, men nokre vart ikkje nøgde. Dei ville vidare, til den ubygde og «ville» vesten. Dei reiste i 1870. Ville dei finne ein stad med fruktbart, steinfritt land som lova? Ville dei møte «indianarar»? Ville dei overleve den første vinteren? Ville dei finne lykka?
Orabel Thortvedt, barnebarn av pionéren Olav G. Geitestad/Thortvedt, bruka store delar av livet sitt på å utforske og skildre denne historia. Ho var kunstutdanna, dyrekjær og svært interessert i lokalhistorie.
Denne boka er eit portrett av ein fascinerande kunstnar og fortel samstundes ei gripande familiesoge. Boka har blitt til i eit norsk-amerikansk samarbeid, og teksten er på både norsk og engelsk.
